Talyllyn Railway
The Talyllyn Railway was the first railway in the world to be preserved, being taken over by volunteers in 1950. It still has some of the locomotives and carriages from its opening in 1865. It is a narrow gauge line, located at Tywyn, near Machynlleth, in Mid-Wales. Regular steam trains run on the 7¼ mile long line from Tywyn Wharf to Nant Gwernol via Dolgoch Falls and Abergynolwyn. The scenery is spectacular, and the train takes passengers to beauty spots not accessible by road. Three of the engines on the line feature in the Reverend W. Awdry's 'Thomas The Tank Engine'® series of books, and will be familiar to children, and adults, everywhere.
