Severn Valley Railway
The Severn Valley Railway is one of England's premier preserved railways, running for 16 miles between Kidderminster in Worcestershire and Bridgnorth in Shropshire, with some fantastic views over unspoilt English countryside. Travel behind a steam locomotive in a beautifully restored vintage carriage, and visit the new Visitor and Education Centre, The Engine House, at Highley. As well as the light and airy display area housing the large collection of locomotives, the Centre also features Buffers Café Restaurant, an outdoor picnic area and a children's play area.

PRESERVEDRAILWAYS.ORG.UK REVIEW: Our reviewer visited the Severn Valley Railway on 20th September 2008, and had the following comments to make: 'The Severn Valley Railway certainly is one of Britain's finest steam railways; if you haven't visited a steam railway yet then this is one of the best places to start. I started my journey at Kidderminster station, which is a beautiful example of a period-style ex-Great Western branch line terminus station. I choose my words carefully, as the buildings and canopy were actually only recently constructed, but look as though they have been there for a good few decades - a typical example of how the Severn Valley's attention to detail enhances the 'step back in time' experience found on a visit to the line. This feeling grows stronger once the train is boarded. The Severn Valley is one of the few railways in the UK that operates carriages of pre-war design, and settling down in a plush compartment to enjoy the journey gives a real feeling of relaxation. I was given a copy of a booklet 'From the window' with my tickets, which gives a good and detailed description of the beautiful countryside through which we travelled. This is interesting for children and adults alike, and gives a whole new aspect to a railway journey that is seldom seen elsewhere. The ticket inspector was very friendly, and gave us more information when we asked for it, taking great care with my children's questions in particular. On alighting from the train at Highley, we paid a visit to the superb 'Engine House' museum. The children found this especially interesting - it has been specially designed to educate and entertain them. Even though there is a superb play area outside the Engine House, the children were far more interested on what was going on inside! 'I can't give too many details in this small space, but suffice to say that it was an absolutely superb day out. The Severn Valley Railway comes very highly recommended.'
